A site team needs to answer a practical question: what should happen before an external contractor starts work in a restricted area?
One person uploads the site’s contractor access procedure into a generic AI tool and asks the question. The answer comes back quickly. It sounds clear and useful. It summarises the procedure, mentions access control, briefing the contractor, checking paperwork and confirming supervision. That may be genuinely helpful. But there are still limits.
The person may not know which version of the document the AI is relying on if several versions exist. The answer may smooth over ambiguity rather than expose it. It may not distinguish clearly between what is mandatory, what is advisory and what depends on the role of the person asking. It may also give a neat summary without showing how this question fits into the wider workflow around permits, approvals, site controls or escalation.
Now imagine the same question in an operational AI setup. The system is shaped around that task. It works from the approved live procedure set, knows which version is current, and returns the answer in a way that fits the workflow. It can show the relevant step, identify who needs to sign off, make clear what must happen before access is granted, and preserve a clearer line back to the underlying source.
The difference is not that generic AI is useless. It is that useful summarisation is still not the same as operational support. That is what makes operational AI different. It is not just AI that can read a document. It is AI shaped around the work.
