Overview

Reducing compliance risk at Aon with purpose built applications

Aon is a global enterprise operating in risk management, insurance, reinsurance brokerage and human capital solutions. In overview:

  • Company size: Over 66,000 employees across more than 120 countries, with approximately $16 billion in revenue
  • Location: London, United Kingdom
  • Services provided by SIRV: Purpose built applications

Aon’s health, safety and wellbeing function are tasked with ensuring UK workers operate from safe and secure premises across more than 40 different locations. As a result, several legal and regulatory requirements need to be met.

In 2014 SIRV was introduced to develop a purpose built application to meet some of Aon’s compliance needs. The partnership led to development of a new purpose built application in 2025 with a rollout planned in 2026 to offices in Europe, Middles East and Africa.

Challenge

  • Aon identified the opportunity to digitise internal workflows
  • It aimed to reduce process risk and automate key reminders / regulatory deadlines
  • Internal solutions and third party products did not meet Aon’s specific needs

Before working with SIRV, report writing and documenting remedial works involved significant human resource. They needed a solution that would free up valuable staff time and augment existing processes.

In addition, the new 2025 purpose built application would need to meet the needs of:

  • Functions other than Health, Safety and Wellbeing
  • Third party contractors
  • Territories outside UK, specifically Europe, Middle East and Africa

Solution

  • Understand job to be done and conduct a need analysis
  • Identify possible solutions and present best fit options
  • Agree specification and define milestones
  • Ensure development is in-line with expectations through regular update meetings and demonstrations
  • Install and train users

A development plan was agreed upon with periodic user and management meetings.

Results

  • 50% reduction in time taken to draft reports
  • Significant improvement in compliance visibility
  • Standardisation of processes
  • Development milestones met and the purpose built application delivered on time and, on budget.

These results helped support Aon’s decision to develop a new purpose built application with SIRV in 2025.

Client testimonial

Having worked with SIRV for a number of years it’s always reassuring to know the expertise and technical knowledge they have can help Aon with new projects and continued support with existing applications we use. Although the guys at SIRV are not health and safety experts the methodical and common sense way they work and explain how they have a solution to issues we raise is very comforting. The response and support they offer to Aon is exceptional, calls and discussions are open and honest, agreed deadlines are always met, personally I feel the work we do together is never one sided and we work to find a winning combination for both parties. Andrew and Phil are such a pleasure to work with and have patience and understanding of the requirements we need to continually improve the Aon health, safety and wellbeing management system. I look forward to continued success working with SIRV.

Key takeaways

  • Efficiencies: The move from paper to digital solutions can result in big efficiencies; in this case a 50% reduction in time spent by staff on report writing.
  • Collaboration: Cultural fit between vendor and customer helps encourage a collaborative approach. Establishing trust with open, frequent communication helps reduce project risk and ensure timelines and budgets are met.
  • Transformation Journey: Aon transitioned from manual, resource-heavy compliance processes to a digitised, purpose-built application developed by SIRV. Starting in 2014, the initial solution streamlined internal workflows, addressing regulatory needs that off-the-shelf products couldn’t meet.
  • Expanded Impact (2025): With growing demands from multiple departments and regions (EMEA), a new custom solution has been developed, resulting in improved compliance visibility, and standardised processes across locations.
  • Invest in purpose-built solutions: Tailored applications outperform generic tools in complex compliance environments, delivering time savings, reduced risk, and better stakeholder alignment through cross-functional input.
  • Start small, scale smart: Proving success locally before expanding globally, paired with strong vendor collaboration and structured development, ensures effective, scalable implementation.

The success of reducing compliance risk at Aon with purpose built applicatons underscores the 10 year+ partnership between Aon and SIRV, demonstrating how collaboration can lead to safer, more secure operating environments.
